NAWAYA RETREAT VILLAGE – Bungalow Interiors
The interiors of Nawaya Retreat Village are shaped by the same philosophy that defines the architecture of the retreat: simplicity, craftsmanship, and an honest use of local materials. Every space was designed as part of a single architectural vision, where furniture, structure, and interior details work together as one cohesive whole.
Defined by generous double-height volumes, handcrafted timber structures, and soft lime-plastered walls, the interiors feel both open and intimate. Natural light enters through arched openings, revealing the texture of handmade surfaces and reinforcing the connection between the interior and the tropical landscape beyond.
Rather than relying on decorative elements, the project celebrates material authenticity. Bespoke beds, wardrobes, tables, and seating were designed specifically for the retreat and handcrafted by local artisans using mango wood. Rope woven from coconut husk fibers becomes both a structural and decorative element, reflecting traditional techniques that remain part of Zanzibar's craft culture.
The restrained palette of timber, lime plaster, natural fibers, and polished earth-toned floors creates calm, tactile spaces where every material is allowed to express its natural character. Even the bathrooms follow the same language, combining handcrafted furniture, simple forms, and natural finishes into a seamless extension of the living spaces.
Instead of pursuing conventional luxury, the interiors embrace authenticity. Their quality lies in proportion, craftsmanship, and the quiet beauty of locally sourced materials, creating spaces that feel timeless, deeply rooted in place, and inseparable from the landscape of Zanzibar.
